MIRIAM ELIZABETH KOVAN

Miriam Elizabeth Kovan passed away peacefully on January 23, 2024 at the age of 88. Miriam was born in Dallas, TX, daughter of the late Leo and Geneva (Smith) Kovan.

Growing up in Dallas, she greatly enjoyed her time as a receptioni­st for Dr. Pepper. Miriam attended college at the University of Chicago on a Ford Scholarshi­p and later attended University of Texas and Southern Methodist University. During a break from college, she met her future husband, Larry Schatzman.

Later in life, she pursued a career as a legal secretary in Houston, Texas with the law firm of Pravel, Gambrell. She continued her legal career as an administra­tive assistant to the late Honorable Judge Harold R. DeMoss of the U. S. Fifth Circuit of Appeals until her retirement.

She was an avid Houston Astros fan and she never missed a televised game while cheering on her favorite player, Jose Altuve.

Miriam is survived by her son Nathan Schatzman and his wife, Margaret, of Lookout Mountain, GA; her daughter, Madeline Schatzman McGartlin, and her husband, Steve, of Austin, TX; her son, Matt Schatzman, and his wife, Rosemary, of Houston, TX; her grandchild­ren, Mary Beth Schatzman, of Minneapoli­s, MN, Tom Schatzman, of Houston, TX, Rachel Schatzman of Steamboat Springs, CO, Will Schatzman of Huntsville, AL; and her brother, Thomas Kovan and his wife, Susan, of Sunnyvale, TX. She was preceded in death by her parents, Leo Kovan, Sr. and Geneva Kovan; her sister, Nancy Vlasta George; and, her brother, Leo Kovan, Jr.

Her family is planning a private memorial service later this spring with internment at Grove Hill Memorial Park in Dallas, TX. The family would like to thank her caregivers at Traditions Hospice and a special thanks to her medical caregiver Llulu Mogotsakgo­tla.
