Texas Children’s expanding its presence in Central Texas

- By Evan MacDonald

Texas Children’s Hospital will open its new Austin campus this month, the hospital system’s latest and most significant expansion into Central Texas.

Texas Children’s Hospital North Austin Campus, located on North Lake Creek Parkway, will begin offering outpatient services on Monday and inpatient services on Feb. 20, the hospital system said in a news release. Texas Children’s leaders held a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the campus on Thursday.

“It has been a longtime goal of mine to continue the incredible mission of our founders and expand access to Texas Children’s high-quality level of care to families throughout Texas,” Texas Children’s CEO Mark A. Wallace said in a news release. “As we celebrate our 70th anniversary as an organization, we are looking forward to serving even more children and women with one of the most elite clinical teams in the world.”

The $485 million hospital, which was announced in 2020, is Texas Children’s fourth hospital and first to be located outside Greater Houston. Aside from its flagship campus in the Texas Medical Center, the hospital system opened its West Campus in 2011 and in The Woodlands in 2017.

Texas Children’s said it hopes the new hospital will fill a need for specialty care in Austin. In the past decade, 30,000 children traveled from Austin to Houston to be treated at Texas Children’s, according to the news release.

Texas Children’s, which is the nation’s largest children’s hospital and is consistently ranked among its best, has been expanding into the Austin market since 2018. The hospital system now has 20 locations offering pediatric, urgent care and specialty care in the area, including an urgent care location that is next door to the new hospital. The Austin area is currently served by Dell Children’s Medical Center of Central Texas and St. David’s Children’s Hospital.

Texas Children’s new 365,000-square-foot campus features a five-story hospital that includes 52 beds and neonatal, cardiovascular and pediatric intensive care units; operating rooms; a sleep center; and fullservice diagnostic services for mothers and children, including a fetal center.

The campus also includes a 170,000-square-foot outpatient building that is connected to the hospital, a full-service emergency center and safe rooms for behavioral health patients.

The new campus is also designed to accommodate further expansion in the future, such as additional outpatient or hospital buildings, according to the news release.

“Austin families and the surrounding communities deserve access to the most advanced treatment from world-renowned physicians at any given moment and Texas Children’s is doing their best to ensure this will happen now and in the future,” Russ Williams, senior vice president of Texas Children’s Hospital North Austin Campus, said in the news release.
