ALICE LOVELESS

03/18/1930 - 02/19/2024

-

Alice Condit Loveless, affectionately known as “Big Al,” died on February 19, 2024 at The Hallmark Senior Living Community in Houston. She was born on March 18, 1930, in Miami, Arizona, the second of four children born to

Edwin and Mabel Condit.

Most of her youth was spent in Tucson, Arizona where her father ran a family grocery store and her mother worked at the University of Arizona bookstore. Alice married William (Bill) Donald Loveless shortly before graduating from The University of Arizona with a degree in home economics. She taught for one year at Catalina Junior High School before she and Bill moved to Houston in 1952 for his job with Shell Oil Company. They were living in Pasadena when their three children, Susan, Donald and Virginia were born. Additionally, Bill’s niece and nephew, Bonlyn Walls and Edwin Bergfield (deceased), lived with the family for a number of years. The family lived in New Jersey, New Mexico, and the Clear Lake area of Houston. Later in life she earned a master’s degree from the University of Houston at Clear Lake, and worked for a number of years in Kingwood as an educational diagnostician. She and Bill lived in Kingwood for many years and attended the First Presbyterian Church. As empty nesters, Alice and Bill accepted an assignment in Saudi Arabia for Bill’s work and traveled extensively during that time. They were active in charity work with their church, volunteering on mission trips to Mexico and at the Christian Community Service Center (CCSC) in Houston. They continued their love of travel in retirement and visited over 50 countries. Alice continued to travel after Bill’s death in 2007 after 56 years of marriage.

Sharp, vivacious, and strong-willed, Alice forged through life as a person who valued education, intellectual prowess, and achievement. Alice had exacting standards for herself and others. Alice was also an enthusiastic cook and entertainer who loved hosting friends and family in her home. Alice adored being a grandmother, organizing fun activities that ranged from card games to blueberry picking, and cooking delicious meals like Belgian waffles, Reuben sandwiches, and paella both for and with her grandchildren. Alice prided herself on her role as family historian, regaling family members with stories of relatives generations removed. A child of the Great Depression, Alice was prone to frugality and abhorred waste. In her later years, she enjoyed the fruits of both her and Bill’s labors, exhibiting generosity to family and several charitable causes.

She is survived by her three children: Susan Massey (Jerry), Donald Loveless (Azizah) and Virginia Siegfried (James); by her nine grandchildren, Mazlindah Loveless (Phillip Martin),

Rob Massey (Angie), Mark Siegfried (Hannah Peters), Steve Massey (Laura), Jasmine Loveless, Mike Siegfried (Kelly Rau), Karen Massey (Eric Larsen), Johan Loveless (Adriane Devereux), and John Siegfried (Amanda); and by eight great-grandchildren.

Alice was predeceased by her brother, William Condit, her sister Olive Helen (Toddy) Caid. She is also survived by her sister Shirley Starkey of Tucson, Arizona, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Alice’s last few years were marked by worsening dementia. Special thanks go to caregivers who comforted her during this phase. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Christian Community Service Center or to the Alzheimer’s Association.

A memorial service and reception will be held at 11:00 on Friday, March 8 at Chapelwood United Methodist Church, 11140 Greenbay Street, Houston. A livestream viewing of the service is planned; please look for instructions at chapelwood. org or legacy.com.
