Computer-savvy detective earns Waller County award

- By Trish Johnson

Dumb criminals and the Internet don’t mix well, but that’s the formula which helped a Katy Police Department detective earn the Waller County Peace Officer of the Year award recently.

Selected for the award by the Waller County district attorney’s office, detective Jason Weathers is a 13-year veteran of the Katy Police Department.

“He gives 110%,” said KPD Capt. Javier Martinez, Weathers’ supervisor. “He started out as a patrol officer and has also been a canine handler. This award is well-deserved.”

According to Martinez, Weathers was instrumental in breaking a series of metal thefts, estimated to be worth $1 million, stretching all the way to Montgomery County. He also solved a burglary of a Katy plumbing business when the thieves decided to sell their plunder on Craig’s List. “It was a bad idea for the criminals,” Martinez said, “but you gotta make our jobs easier every now and again.”

Weathers, 38, and his wife Michelle, live in Katy with their eight-year-old son and five-year-old daughter. After serving three years in the U.S. Navy, Weathers followed in the footsteps of his father, who is a retired Missouri City detective.

“I enjoy what I do,” said Weathers, who is originally from Sugar Land. “In some sort of way, I feel like I’m giving something back to the community. But it doesn’t feel like I’ve been here 13 years. There’s a lot of satisfaction in our work. There’s something new every day, and I believe what I do makes a difference.”

“Detective Weathers is a fine officer and an all-around good guy,” said Waller County DA Elton Mathis, who presented Weathers a plaque at Waller County Commissioners’ Court. “I was pleased and honored to present this award to Jason.”

Weathers said he expects to serve Katy until he retires.

“This is a great place to be, he noted, “and it’s a great place to raise a family. I don’t plan on going anywhere else.” Trish Johnson is a freelance writer
