JCI offers summer anniversar­y fun

For many, summertime eats means hot dogs and JCI Grill, better known as James Coney Island, is stepping up with deals throughout the next few sweltering months.

In celebratio­n of its 92nd anniversar­y, the eatery will be offering 92-cent Original Coney hot dogs with mustard, chili and onions every third Thursday of the month from now until September, or on May 21, June 18, July 16 and Aug. 20, at all of its 20 Houston-area locations.

In addition, customers can purchase the JCI Grill Anniversar­y Cup for $5.99 and enjoy 92-cent refills on deal days.

And in the interest of a little history, James Coney Island was started by two brothers, Tom and James Papadakis, when they opened their first hot dog stand in downtown Houston. District A opening local office

In an effort to better serve residents closer to their homes, the new Houston City Council District A satellite office is set for its grand opening on Thursday, May 28, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Freed Park Community Center, 6818 Shadyvilla Lane.

PDQ, which stands

for “People Dedicated to Quality,” is set to open its 40th location and its first in Houston in June.

The new restaurant, which brands itself as “fast casual” and serves up chicken tenders, salads, sandwiches and French fries, will be located in the Memorial area at 9440 Katy Freeway on the north side of the interstate.

PDQ will be open for lunch and dinner seven days a week with dinein seating and a drivethrou­gh. Catering is also available for events and carryout.

West Houston gun shop hosting event

To mark its one-year anniversar­y, Boyert Shooting Center is holding a twoday event with a firearms sale, carnival games, special classes, membership offerings and free food.

The event, which is free and open to the public, is slated for June 20-21 from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. both days at the store, located at 9099 Westheimer Road.

March for Healthier Foods set for May 23

Houstonian­s will join with others around the world for the May 23 “March Against Monsanto” and its use of geneticall­y modified foods.

Marches are planned in more than 400 cities in 38 nations.

The Houston-area event is happening at 1 p.m. near the Starbucks on the corner of Westheimer and Post Oak at 2521 Post Oak Blvd.

Memorial restaurant serves charity

The LongHorn Steakhouse in Memorial City recently participat­ed in the Restaurant Community Grants program in support of local community programs, helping to donate $3,000 to Target Hunger.

The effort is through Darden Restaurant Foundation, the charitable arm of Darden Restaurant­s.

“We’re proud to be able to support Houston-area nonprofits through our Restaurant Community Grants program,” said Stephanie Ghertner, director of the Darden Foundation. “Our team members are incredibly passionate about getting involved in their local communitie­s, and this program enables them to do just that.”

Other groups receiving grants are Project Joy and Hope for Texas, which was gifted with $1,000, East Fort Bend Human Needs Ministry will benefit from a $2,000 donation, and Nourishmen­t for the Needy received $1,000 for its work.
