‘Evita’ musical planned for arts center

-

The Houston Family Arts Center presents “Evita,” which concludes its run this week on May 22-23 at 7:30 p.m. and a final performance at 3 p.m. on May 24. Tickets are $26 for adults.

With lyrics by Tim Rice and music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, the musical focuses on the life and times of Argentine leader Eva Perón, whose political and cultural influence in South America is still felt today. Though born in a poverty-stricken broken family, Eva’s life changed when she met a political leader at an event he organized benefiting earthquake victims.

By the end of the first act, the musical traces the history of the relationship that begins a rise to power and cultural influence by the two lovers, with Juan Perón eventually making her his wife and first lady despite being 20 years her senior. Because the production explores adult themes of sexuality and power, it may not be appropriate for all audiences.

The musical was adapted by Hollywood in 1996 starring Madonna and Antonio Banderas. With its riveting and somber soundtrack, the musical initially premiered in New York’s West End in 1978 and was on Broadway the following year.

The local production is directed by Matthew Logan, Bethany Morgan is the stage manager, Jennifer Stewart is the musical director and Adam Delka is the choreographer. Shenae’a Moore stars as Eva Perón, Darry Hearon is the narrator Che and Larry Luck stars as Juan Perón.

The Houston Family Arts Center’s The Garza Main Stage is located at 10760 Grant Road in Houston. Learn more at www.houstonfac.com or call 281-685-6374.
