Cy Springs girls finish strong
Third place team finish at state meet crowning achievement of solid season
The Cypress Springs girls placed third at the UIL Track and Field State Meet last week at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin.
The Panthers finished behind Converse Judson (60 points) and DeSoto (48) with 45 points.
They were second at state last year. “We faced a lot of adversity this year, so I still feel pretty good about where we finished,” coach Ruqayya Gibson said in a release. “The girls have fought and learned some life-long lessons. We set a school record in the 4x400 relay (Saturday), and we did that with two alternates.
“Those are the kinds of things that give me a good feeling as a coach.”
Cy-Fair ISD placed two other girls teams inside the top 10 – Cy Lakes in seventh and Cy Creek in ninth.
On the boys side, Cy Falls placed eighth in the team standings.
The school district left the Class 6A meet with four state champions and 11 medalists all together.
Cy Creek senior Meia Gordon took first in the shot put and discus. She threw a distance of 48-8 in the shot and 155-9 in the discus.
“It felt really good to win after three trips to state,” Gordon said.
“I put a little pressure on myself to do better and throw farther, and be consistent. It feels great to be a champion.” Cy Springs junior Samiyah Samuels won the long jump with a personal record of 207¾. “I planned out how I wanted to jump and put my mind to it, and that’s what I did,” Samuels said. “My goal was to win. I’ve always been going for 20 feet, so to hit my PR and win at the same time is amazing.” Cy Falls junior Isaiah Lucas secured gold with a 36.87 in the 300-meter hurdles. “I couldn’t be more proud of Isaiah today,” coach Allen Atteberry said. “I thought he had a good chance going in to win it because he hadn’t been beaten this year. He made it a dramatic finish.
“We’re excited to have him back next year.”
