MLB REPORT
BOSTON RED SOX
3B Pablo Sandoval (sprained left ankle) and C Blake Swihart (sprained left foot) were unavailable for Sunday’s series finale against the Red Sox after getting hurt Saturday. They are day-to-day.
LOS ANGELES ANGELS
Righthander Jered Weaver was placed on the 15-day disabled list and will undergo an MRI on his left hip.
One day after Weaver suffered his fourth consecutive defeat in a 4-1 loss to the Oakland Athletics, the Angels decided to put the pitcher on the DL to give his sore hip time to rest.
Weaver (4-8) said he’s been bothered by soreness in his hip for some time but doesn’t think it’s related to his current slump.
Still, the Angels are taking a cautious approach with their 32-yearold pitcher, who last won on May 30. In his four starts since then, Weaver has given up 19 earned runs in 26 innings.
Outfielder Alfredo Marte was called up from Class AAA Salt Lake City to take Weaver’s roster spot.
NEW YORK METS
After failing to trade righthander Dillon Gee, the club placed him on outright waivers with an intention to send him to Class AAA Las Vegas. Gee was designated for assignment Monday.
Barring a claim, Gee would clear waivers Tuesday.
Gee can refuse the assignment to Las Vegas if he clears waivers. However, it’s unlikely he would do so, as refusing the assignment would vacate the $3.1 million salary still owed him this season.
TEXAS RANGERS
3B Adrian Beltre said his injured right thumb is “progressing little by little” but that it’s still painful for him to swing a bat, and he doesn’t know when he’ll be playing again. Beltre said he took swings over the weekend and was “searching for a grip that won’t hurt.”
