Jones surges late, wins Xfinity race

Erik Jones took the lead from Ryan Blaney with 11 laps remaining and held on to win the NASCAR Xfinity Series AttiCat 300 at Chicagolan­d Speedway in Joliet, Ill.

Jones, 19, beat Blaney to the finish line by 1.959 seconds. A driver for the Joe Gibbs racing team, he won the NASCAR truck race at Iowa Speedway on Friday night.

Jones led on two other occasions during the 200lap race. He was penalized with 18 other drivers for pitting with the pits closed with 48 laps to go, but moved up quickly after restarting in 10th place.

Pole sitter Austin Dillon finished third, 2.3 seconds behind, with Brendan Gaughan fourth and Xfinity series standings leader Chris Buescher fifth.

Jones, ineligible for points in the Xfinity series, picked up his second win of the season to go with six other top-10 finishes. He’s third in points in the truck series. In other news: • Matt Hagan won the Funny Car final in the NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals for his first victory on his home track in Bristol, Tenn.

Hagan, from nearby Christians­burg, Va., had a 4.164-second run at 303.23 mph at Bristol Dragway in his Dodge Charger R/T. He beat Don Schumacher Racing teammate Ron Capps for his fourth of the season and 18th of his career.

Richie Crampton won in Top Fuel, and Erica Enders topped the Pro Stock field.

• Nico Rosberg showed his championsh­ip potential by overtaking pole sitter Lewis Hamilton on the first turn to win the Austrian Grand Prix in style at Speilberg, Austria. Rosberg’s third win this season took his career tally to 11, and cut Hamilton’s overall Formula One lead to 10 points.
