John h. Causey

1940-2015

John H. Causey, 75, of Conroe, Texas died on Saturday, the 4th of July 2015 at his home with his loving family at his side. He was born on the 16th of May 1940 to Herman and Jess Margaret Causey in Houston, Texas. His father was a drilling superintendent for Humble Oil Company. Early years were spent following the rigs around Texas.

Settling back in Houston in 1955, John attended Stephen F. Austin High School. In 1958, he became a proud member of the United States Coast Guard. Four and a half years were spent serving his country. After leaving the Coast Guard, John returned to Houston and went to work at Wilson Supply Company while attending the University of Houston.

In 1976, John and four coworkers left Wilson Supply to form Cinco Pipe and Supply. The company flourished and ultimately, John and his special “brother” and friend, Ralph Bell, became the owners of Cinco. They sold the company and retired to The Good Life in 2007.

As fishing was one of John’s favorite pastimes, he really enjoyed having a home in Port O’Connor. He and his friends spent many hours in pursuit of the big one. Many friends and great memories were made at the coast.

Rodeo and horses were always a big part of John’s life. To this, he added cattle when he became the proud owner of the Causey Ranch in Refugio, Texas. He called it “The Dream” and spent his last years improving and building on the ranch. Favorite times were spent at the roping arena, the fire-pit, out counting new calves or just sitting on the porch enjoying the South Texas sunsets.

John and his wife of fiftyeight years, Babs, attend the Lone Star Cowboy Church in Montgomery, Texas when at home in Conroe. While at the ranch, they attend the First Methodist Church of Refugio. He loved his God and thanked him each day for his close, loving family. In his early 20s, John became a member of the Masonic Lodge and on the 23rd of May 1970 became a 32nd Degree Mason and a member of the Scottish Rite.

Since moving to Conroe, John was a strong supporter of the Montgomery County Fair & Rodeo. He served as Rodeo Chairman for nineteen years and was a Lifetime Member of the Executive Committee. In 1976, John joined the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo as a member of the Horspitality Committee. His first year was spent parking trucks and trailers in an unpaved lot. Much later, John became Horse Show Chairman. After being elected to the Board of Directors, he became a Vice President. Three years later, John was appointed to be a member of the Executive Committee. At the time of his death, he was a life-time member of that committee.

An organization that held a special place in John’s heart was the Tejas Vaqueros. He was a member for thirtyeight years. John always said one of the proudest moments in his life was when he was elected President of that organization. Two sons and two grandsons have followed him.

John was preceded in death by his father, Herman Causey; mother, Jess Causey; and his son, Thomas Steven Causey. Left to celebrate his life and to mourn his death are his loving wife, Barbara Ann Causey; and their children, Debra Lynn Sparks and her husband Robert, John Michael Causey and his wife Irma, and Donald Wayne Causey and his wife Rachel. He is also survived by six grandchildren who loved him greatly: Ryan Sparks and his wife Jenn, Kara Wheeler and her husband Clifford, Brent Sparks and his wife Courtney, Dustin Causey and his wife Susannah, Derek Causey and his fiancé Jodi Hatton, and Avery Causey. John was very proud of his six great granddaughters who adored their PaPa and followed him everywhere: Ashlyn Coppin, Willow Sparks, Eden Sparks, Kalynn Wheeler, Kelsey Wheeler, and Caroline Causey (due in early August). John was a loving uncle to his nephew, David McDaniel; and his nieces, Karen Bell, Susan (Tommy) Hathcock, Debra (Jay) Beard and Vicki (Gary) Vest. He is also survived by his very special “brother” Bob Secrest.

Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from five o’clock in the afternoon until eight o’clock in the evening, on Wednesday, the 8th of July, in the Jasek Chapel and grand foyer of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.

The funeral service is to be conducted at noon, on Thursday, the 9th of July, at Lone Star Cowboy Church, 21627 Eva Street in Montgomery.

The interment will follow, via an escorted cortege, at Garden Park Cemetery in Conroe

Those honored to serve as pallbearers during Thursday’s service are Bob Secrest, Webb Melder, Jr., Judge Donald Higgenbotham, David Faust, Grover Kelley, and Bobby Hargrave. Honorary pallbearers are the members of the Houston Livestock Show Executive Committee and the Tejas Vaqueros.

In lieu of usual remembrances, memorial contributions, in John’s memory, may be directed to youth oriented charity of your choice.
