Cueto outduels Scherzer, tosses 2-hitter in Reds’ win

WASHINGTON — Johnny Cueto pitched a two-hitter with 11 strikeouts for his first complete game of the year, Joey Votto homered and drove in three runs, and the Cincinnati Reds beat Max Scherzer and the Washington Nationals 5-0 on Tuesday night.

Cueto is among the candidates vying to earn a spot on the All-Star roster via a final vote from the fans, and this performanc­e certainly didn’t hurt his bid.

CUBS SWEEP CARDINALS: Addison Russell hit a tying single and scored during a three-run rally in the seventh inning, and Chicago beat St. Louis 5-3 to complete a day-night doublehead­er sweep at Wrigley Field. The Cubs won the opener 7-4 behind a strong start by Jake Arrieta.

ROYALS SWEEP RAYS: Alcides Escobar hit a basesloade­d double, and host Kansas City cruised to a 7-1 win over Tampa Bay and a sweep of their day-night doublehead­er. The victory in Game 2 came after Paulo Orlando hit a ninthinnin­g grand slam to give Kansas City a 9-5 win in the opener.

DIAMONDBAC­KS 4, RANGERS 2: Rookie Robbie Ray took a shutout into the eighth inning to outpitch veteran Yovani Gallardo, and Arizona won at Texas.

RED SOX 4, MARLINS 3: Xander Bogaerts drove in three runs with a bases-loaded single in the seventh inning, leading Boston past Miami at Fenway Park.

ANGELS 10, ROCKIES 2: Albert Pujols and Mike Trout hit two of Los Angeles’ four homers in its win at Colorado.

ATHLETICS 4, YANKEES 3: Brett Lawrie hit a leadoff homer in the 10th, sending Oakland past host New York.

BRAVES 4, BREWERS 3: A.J. Pierzynski homered among his three hits as Atlanta defeated host Milwaukee.

TWINS 8, ORIOLES 3: Miguel Sano hit his first major league homer, and Minnesota beat visiting Baltimore.

BLUE JAYS 2, WHITE SOX 1: Josh Donaldson homered to lead Toronto to a victory at Chicago.

PIRATES 3, PADRES 2: Gregory Polanco hit a go-ahead triple in the eighth that sent host Pittsburgh past San Diego.
