Police say investigators recovered three handguns from the body of a man shot and killed Tuesday by a patrol officer during a chase in which two other suspects were injured.

In a statement, the Houston Police Department provided details about the attempted robbery at a gas station in the southwest corner of Houston that sparked a vehicle pursuit into a Missouri City neighborhood.

It ended about 2 a.m. when Officer M. Rivera shot Marcellus Jamarcus Burley, 18, and Demontre Gregory Clark, 17, during a foot chase, killing Burley and wounding Clark, according to the release. Police say a third suspect, Jalanie Jeanlouis, 24, also was shot and wounded by Rivera when she appeared to reach for a weapon.

The wounded suspects were treated at Memorial Hermann Hospital and face charges of aggravated robbery with a weapon in the 180th State District Court. Rivera, a six-year HPD veteran, wasn’t hurt.

HPD’s Homicide and Internal Affairs Divisions is investigating, as is policy. Because the shooting happened outside Houston, the Fort Bend County District Attorney’s Office also is investigating.

The incident started at the Buzzy Bee convenience store on South Post Oak Road at about 1:50 a.m.

A woman was walking to her car at the convenience store when two men approached her, red bandanas covering their faces. She climbed into her car and started to drive off when one of the men “pulled out a gun and attempted to rob her,” the release said. As she drove off, the second man reportedly fired several shots.

HPD patrol officers had been in the area, responding to a different incident, and “saw the suspects with the weapons in their hands,” the release said. The officers saw the men get into a gray, four-door Volvo and pursued the car, but the driver did not stop.

The pursuit stretched about five miles until the Volvo stopped on Tiny Tree Drive in Missouri City.
