Clear Lake graduate calculates low score in a Majors win
Physics major Davis takes title at Collegiate Open for Millsaps
Cody Davis’ golf game has steadily improved since he graduated from Clear Lake. Last month he took the biggest swings of his life.
A senior physics major at NCAA Division III Millsaps College in Mississippi, Davis won the title at the Gleannloch Pines Collegiate Open last month in Spring. The tournament is part of the Collegiate Players Tour that is open to all college-aged players.
Davis shot 6-under for three rounds to win by five. He posted career best scores for 18, 36 and 54 holes.
He said he has played well in his first three years as a Millsaps Major, but he never had put it all together like he did at the Gleannloch Pines tournament. His confidence has ‘shot through the roof ’.
“It was one of those tournaments where everything I have been working on was great,” Davis said. “It’s all paying off. I haven’t won a tournament in several years.
“I wanted to finally do that to prove myself I can do it. (No matter where I play from now on) I can look back on it and say if you did it then you can definitely do it now.”
Davis graduated from Clear Lake in 2012 and earned first team all-district selections his junior and senior years. He said it always was important for him to land a spot on a college team.
He has traveled to all of the Millsaps’ competitions in his first three years. He has been among the top three on the team in most of those tournaments. His best finish came at the Belhaven Invitational in September when he placed fourth, helping the Millsaps win the team title.
Ever since he won at Gleannloch he said his scores have been consistently lower. Before the win he was shooting 75-76 on a regular basis. He has been shooting even par ever since then.
The biggest difference, he said, has been his improved short game.
“It has been one of those things that comes and goes,” Davis said. “I have been trying to make it more consistent. I have been trying to get that to where it should be.”
With two more months to go before the his next college tournament, Davis said he is excited to get going. With only one year of eligibility left he wants to make the most of his opportunity with the Gleannloch victory providing a jump start.
“I would like to win a tournament individually and help get my team to nationals and win the conference title,” he said.
