Splendora High graduate builds bridges, roads with the Seabees
2013 Splendora High School graduate constructionman apprentice Gabriel Carvajal (above) is helping to build bridges and roads around the world as a member of the U.S. Navy’s Naval Construction Group 2, based in Gulfport, Miss. “I make sure our building is secure and guide new Seabees to ensure things run smoothly,” said Carvajal. Seabees are trained as builders and fighters. They not only build bridges, roads, runways and other structures in war zones; they also defend those structures after they’ve built them. Carvajal’s commanding officer said he’s proud of the hard work and dedication he sees in the Seabee community.
“Liftoff Houston” business plan competition helps new business owners
The City of Houston and Capital One Bank today announced the third year launch of the “Liftoff Houston!” business plan competition. Sponsored by Capital One Bank in partnership with the Houston Public Library and the Office of Business Opportunity, “Liftoff Houston!” is a competition that engages and empowers Houstonians seeking to start a new business in Houston by providing them with access to essential information, resources and the support necessary to develop a sound business plan toward realizing their goal. Capital One Bank is providing cash prizes totaling $30,000 to the top three winning business plan submissions in the categories of Product, Service and Innovation. To be eligible, applicants must have a for-profit business that is less than a year old, has earned less than $10,000 in revenue, and is operated by owners that live within the Houston city limits.
