Harry Pepper, a remarkable, generous, charming and loving man, passed away July 7, 2015, after living a healthy, vigorous 104 1/2 years. Every day was filled with his joy of life, his wit, humor, fun and laughter that brought smiles and happiness to every person he encountered. Harry was born October 16, 1910, in Providence, RI, to Lena and Max Pepper, the sixth of seven siblings. He grew up in Houston graduating from Sam Houston High School where he earned a football scholarship to the University of Texas. In 1935, Harry married Esther Goldberg, and they had a happy, beautiful life together for over 70 years until Esther’s death in 2006. He founded Pepper Rendering Company in the late 1930’s, and worked hard, long hours to build a successful business. In 1958 Harry sold the company and began investing in real estate, apartments and warehouses. Harry was a Life Member and volunteer with the Houston Live Stock Show and Rodeo for 66 years, serving as an original member of the Calf Scramble Committee. He was proud to have been a Shriner and 32nd Degree Mason for over 50 years. He also volunteered for Meals on Wheels and raised money by participating in fun runs for every charitable organization in Houston. He graciously gave his time, resources and energy to so many worthy causes. Harry was a life-long athlete becoming one of the most decorated Senior Olympians in the country having won numerous medals (mostly Gold) in decathlon while in his 70’s, cycling in his 80’s and early 90’s and finally bowling until he was 103. In 2003 he was inducted into the Ronnie Arrow Athletic Hall of Fame. Harry is survived by his very fortunate three daughters Gloria Katz (Bernard), Sondy Lillebo (Doug) and Arlene Nathan (Marvin), adored grandchildren Rusty Silverman (Nancy), Teri Gerber (Howie), Doug Pack (Rachel), Rick Silverman (Georgi), David Pack, Nicole Gibson (George), Natalie Reichman (Gavin), and 12 cherished great grandchildren. Memorial Services will be held on Friday, July 10, 2015, at 11:30 am at Temple Emanu El, 1500 Sunset, Houston 77005. The family would be honored if donations were made to the Anti-Defamation League of Houston. Harry was the most wonderful, special person who will be greatly missed, but as he often said, he had a hellava ride!
