Carlton Blakely Newman, 94, of Houston, passed away Saturday August 15, 2015. Carlton was born September 20, 1920 in Houston to George and Aida Newman. He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Nancy Lemoine Newman; children, Blake Newman, and Julie Leach & husband Larry Leach; grandchild­ren, Bobby Leach and Jessica Leach; honorary grandchild­ren, Samantha & Caitlin Ehlinger; sister-in-law, Barbara Newman and many nieces, nephews and extended family.

Carlton grew up in his beloved Houston and called it home his entire life. He attended St. Thomas High School where he made many life-long friends. After graduation he attended UH while teaching dance classes at night. He would remain an accomplish­ed dancer until his early nineties. He served his country in the US Army Air Corps in World War II, and afterwards he drove trucks until he started a successful dry cleaning business. He started an air-conditioni­ng company in the 60’s and then a sign constructi­on business in the 70’s. Throughout all this he spent his weekends on the water, first in Galveston and then at his lake house at Cape Royale on Lake Livingston. Later in life he became an accomplish­ed gardener. His curious, energetic nature kept him young even into his 90’s. He was loved by those who knew him and will be greatly missed.

A Memorial Service celebratin­g Carlton’s life will be held Saturday, August 22, 2015 at 2:00 PM at Dettling Funeral Home, 14094 Memorial Drive, Houston, TX 77079. A reception will follow the service at the Leach family home at 506 Clear Spring Dr., Houston, TX 77079.
