Organizers of the third annual Paws and Claws Adopt-a-Thon, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 29-30 at Hometown Heroes Park, 2105 Dickinson Ave., League City, are preparing for a record number of pet adoptions.

Last year, 186 animals found forever homes during the two-day event.

“This year in a new location allowing for many more animals to be shown we are expecting to make history again with a goal to adopt 225 animals” said Monica Millican, president of Friends of League City Animal Shelter.

For $25, qualified adopters can take a new pet home with a “swag bag” full of goodies. The fee includes sterilization, microchip, rabies vaccination, collar, tag, leash and 30 days of pet insurance.

Participants are the League City, Pasadena, Galveston County and Webster Animal Shelters, Galveston Island Humane Society, Friendswood Animal Advocates, Mutt Mesh, and Friends of League City Animal Shelter.

Galveston police: Beware of scams

Following weeks of calls about various phone- and Internet-based scams, the Galveston Police Department is urging residents and visitors to be vigilant about unsolicited requests for funds and to do their homework when renting homes on the island.

Galveston police advise visitors to stick with reputable online vacation rental markets such as www. vrbo.com or www.homeaway.com, or to contact listing agencies directly.

Those who feel they may be on the receiving end of a con should attempt to get contact information from the source and then contact the Galveston Police Department for assistance. For information, contact Sgt. Joshua Schirard, 409765-3792 or jschirard@cityofgalveston.org.
