ACC regents approve budget

Alvin Community College regents unanimousl­y approved the 2015-16 budget at their July 30 meeting.

The $28.15 million budget includes a 2 percent raise for faculty and staff and minor capital improvemen­ts. The spending plan is a slight increase from the current year’s $27.37 million budget.

In other action, regents approved hiring for several positions: Cynthia Griffith, vice president of instructio­n; Marilyn Dement, vice president of student services; Linda Austin, dean of technical programs; James Simpson, dean and executive director of continuing education and workforce developmen­t; and Holly Williams, director of retention and student success.

ACC prepares for fall semester

Alvin Community College students and staff are gearing up for the fall 2015 semester, which starts Aug. 24.

In addition to a traditiona­l fall semester, the school offers two eightweek mini semesters. The first will run Aug. 24 to Oct. 13. The second will be Oct. 15 to Dec. 4.

For students who prefer to begin their studies later, registrati­on for the 12-week Second Start semester will be Aug. 25 to Sept. 11. Classes begin Sept. 21.

Friendswoo­d High School senior aces ACT

Friendswoo­d High School senior Candise Tat received a perfect score of 36 on the ACT test she took in April, her parents Anh and Dung Tat said.

According to the ACT website, out of 1.8 million ACT tests taken in 2014, the average composite score was 21. Just 0.076 percent of test-takers that year earned a perfect score.

FUMC collects uniforms for PISD

Children at First United Methodist Church Pearland collected an estimated 3,000 shirts, shorts, pants, skirts, shoes, backpacks and lunch boxes for the Pearland Independen­t School District PTA Community Closet and Swap Shop this summer.

Participan­ts in the church’s annual Gifts Camp filled 30 large bags with new or gently used school uniform items.

FHS senior attends science congress

Friendswoo­d High School senior Tyler Bandini represente­d Texas as a delegate to the Congress of Future Science and Technology Leaders in Lowell, Massachuse­tts, this summer. He joined students from across the country at the three-day congress to hear Nobel laureates and National Medal of Science winners talk about leading scientific research and receive advice from deans of the world’s top tech universiti­es. Bandini was nominated for the program by astronaut Buzz Aldrin, science director of the National Academy of Future Scientists and Technologi­sts.
