HomeAid Houston Day inspires kindness
In 2013, Mayor Annise Parker proclaimed July 23 “HomeAid Houston Day” at a ceremony held at City Hall. The Proclamation lauded HomeAid’s accomplishments as a Greater Houston Builders Association (GHBA) charity, completing at that time, 21 construction and remodeling projects to benefit Houston’s homeless community.
To recognize the second anniversary of this honor, HomeAid board members and staff gathered at a recent HomeAid board meeting to perform “acts of kindness” by assembling 1,000 HomeAid Care Kits to be donated to SEARCH Homeless Services.
The kits included daily hygiene items such as shampoo, soap, combs and toothbrushes. SEARCH received them as part of its Outreach program where the kits will be given to the homeless. With Outreach, SEARCH vans visit sites throughout Houston identifying homeless men and women, offering them critical support services such as stabilization, education and counseling.
“HomeAid Houston Day has become a red letter day on the calendar,” said Greg Tomlinson, president of HomeAid. “To celebrate, it is a tradition for our entire team to work together on a project that benefits those less fortunate. Every HomeAid project, no matter how large or small, represents our mission, ‘to build new lives for homeless families and individuals through housing and community outreach’.”
The HomeAid Houston Day proclamation, sponsored by Councilwoman Wanda Adams, also highlighted HomeAid’s addition, at that time, of $8.5 million in real estate to the city and county and the $4.6 million in donations HomeAid had received from GHBA members through materials and labor for the projects.
Today, HomeAid has added nearly $10 million in real estate to Houston’s homeless community resulting in over 400 beds.
“This is a special day for HomeAid Houston and all of the hardworking staff members and board of directors,” Tomlinson added. “It is also a proud day for the hundreds of vendors, builders, remodelers and trades who have donated to HomeAid projects over the past 12 years. None of these projects would be possible without the collaboration and commitment by so many generous people.”
