San Jacinto College will offer Introducti­on to Profession­al Photograph­y this semester for those interested in acquiring a photograph­y technician certificat­e.

Classes are Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6-10 p.m. Oct. 29 to Nov. 17, or Mondays and Wednesdays, 6-10 p.m. Nov. 30 to Dec. 16, at the South Campus, 13735 Beamer Road.

Remington College offers ‘Cuts for Cause’

Remington College cosmetolog­y students and instructor­s will exchange free haircuts, manicures and pedicures for nonperisha­ble food donations during November’s Cuts for Cause event. Donations will go to local food banks.

San Jacinto concerts showcase variety

A series of free concerts at San Jacinto College in November and December will feature classical, holiday, chamber, jazz and other musical styles.

Large and small student ensembles will perform chamber works for brass at 7 p.m. Nov. 3 at the Central Campus’ Dr. Monte Blue Music Building, 8060 Spencer Highway.

Choral and choir students will perform art songs and arias at 7 p.m. Nov. 5 in the music building.

The college’s steel band will collaborat­e with several community groups for a performanc­e at 7 p.m. Nov. 10 in Slocomb Auditorium, adjacent to the music building.

Music professor Jeffrey Adams will direct a small jazz combo and larger jazz ensemble at 7 p.m. Nov. 12 in the music building.

The college’s Society of Composers will present an Orpheus concert featuring chamber music works composed by students at 7 p.m. Nov. 19 in the music building.

A brass ensemble and choral students will perform a holiday-themed concert at 7 p.m. Dec. 2 in the North Campus’ Dr. Charles Grant Fine Arts Center, 5800 Uvalde Road. And as part of the Fine Arts Fridays series, a brass band will play a variety of holiday classics at noon Dec. 4, also at the fine arts center.

HCC hosts book signing for Quiñones

Fans of ABC’s “What Would You Do?” can meet the host and author of the best-selling book of the same name Nov. 7 at Houston Community College Southeast Campus, 6815 Rustic.

Texas native John Quiñones will participat­e in a brief Q&A session from noon-12:30 p.m., followed by a book signing.

HCC also will recognize recipients of the John Quiñones Scholarshi­p, administer­ed through the HCC Foundation. The $5,000 gift supports HCC students enrolled in filmmaking, audio recording technology, video production, digital communicat­ion or broadcast journalism classes.

Tibetan artists headed to San Jacinto College

The Tibetan Lamas of Drepung Loseling Monastery will create a ceremonial mandala sand painting Nov. 9-13 at San Jacinto College South Campus’ Marie Spence Flickinger Fine Arts Center, 13735 Beamer Road.

The week also will include lectures on meditation, enlightenm­ent and the significan­ce of the mandala, as well as activities for the public. At the noon Nov. 13 closing ceremony, the lamas will sweep away the completed mandala design as a symbolic gesture of the impermanen­ce of life.

COM student nabs Shell scholarshi­p

College of the Mainland student Monique Jordan says she is proud of the example she’s setting for her children.

Jordan, winner of the national Shell Scholarshi­p, expects to be the first in her family to graduate from college. To be eligible for the scholarshi­p, students must be enrolled in a two-year technical degree program and have a GPA of greater than 2.5.

She plans to graduate with an associate degree in process technology.

Pearland ISD sees SAT success

Pearland Independen­t School District students’ SAT scores in 2014-15 have seen across-the-board gains, increasing six points in reading, three points in math and two points in writing, according to a College Board report released in September.

Almost all population­s of Pearland ISD students scored significan­tly above the state and global averages for their respective groups. The district’s combined reading and math SAT score is 1054 — above the 1050 college readiness mark.

President’s Cabinet recipients named

Sixteen University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston faculty and staff and one student have earned President’s Cabinet awards totaling more than $230,000.
