Speakeasy event to help Sugar Land museum
We are all far too young to remember the days of prohibition in the 1920s, when all alcoholic beverages were banned. It was a time of unrest for the country, and in Fort Bend County, most likely, “speakeasies” were the only way citizens could imbibe.
Usually this involved going to a rather nondescript location and saying a password, which would allow the speaker and guests to enter a “back room,” where they could order an alcoholic beverage, enjoy music and dancing, and perhaps a meal.
To commemorate that time in history, the Sugar Land Heritage Foundation is stepping back and re-creating a speakeasy, on Thursday, Nov. 5, for its inaugural fall fundraiser.
From 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., the password at Anson Aviation at the Sugar Land Regional Airport is “speakeasy,” and the evening is designed to celebrate the end of prohibition.
Expect fine fare, libations, music and maybe a friendly game of chance at the “casino.” Entertainment surprises are also part of the evening, which will recognize a time in the county’s history most of us can only imagine.
Sterling McCall Automotive Group is the presenting sponsor and individual tickets are $35, in advance or available at the door. Sponsorships are also available by calling 281-494-0261. Tickets are available online at www. slheritage.org.
