DUTCH MASTER:
Never heard of Joachim Wtewael? Not surprising, even though he’s been around since the early 17th century. Wtewael’s first-ever solo exhibition comes to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston starting Sunday. “Pleasure and Piety: The Art of Joachim Wtewael (1566–1638)” finally gives this Dutch master a proper introduction with 35 paintings on canvas, copper and wood, plus a selection of drawings. Beloved by curators for their vivid, unusual jewel tones and dense compositions, Wtewael’s works include portraits and scenes from the Bible and mythology. The show will be on view through Jan. 31 in the museum’s Beck Building, 5601 Main; $7.50-$15, 713-6397300, mfah.org.
