Regarding “Ryan reined in by anti-immigration Republicans” (Page B9, Thursday), the reason there will be no immigration bill is because of the question of what to do with the undocumented already living in America. The tea party wing of the GOP will never agree to any bill allowing undocumented residents to stay.

Nothing but total deportation of all undocumented residents and the border with Mexico being shut down to any illegal crossings will suffice. Neither of these conditions are realistic. It is on these two points that immigration reform will continue to founder as long as the GOP is in power.
