JOHN McCLAIN’S POWER RANKINGS
1. New England 9-0 (1): The Patriots are the fifth team, and the first since San Francisco (198398), with at least 15 straight winning seasons.
2. Carolina 9-0 (3): Cam Newton and Steve Young are the only players to have at least 30 games with at least one TD passing and rushing.
3. Cincinnati 8-1 (2): When the Bengals lost to the Texans, they failed to give the NFL 3 teams with 9-0 records for the first time in history.
4. Arizona 7-2 (5): The Cardinals’ top-ranked offense has been incredibly consistent. They rank eighth in rushing and fourth in passing.
5. Minnesota 7-2 (6): Adrian Peterson tied O.J. Simpson with a sixth 200-yard rushing performance, the most in NFL history.
6. Denver 7-2 (4): This is the last year of quarterback Brock Osweiler’s contract, so the Broncos need to find out if he can play.
7. Pittsburgh 6-4 (8): Antonio Brown is the fourth player in league history with at least 27 catches in a two-game span.
8. Green Bay 6-3 (7): The biggest mystery in the NFL is what has caused the Packers to lose three straight games and fall behind Minnesota.
9. Atlanta 6-3 (12): Perhaps having a week off will help the Falcons rediscover their disappearing offense when they entertain Indianapolis.
10. Buffalo 5-4 (15): Rex Ryan got revenge against the Jets. Now he has a Monday night game against New England.
11. N.Y. Jets 5-4 (13): After their 3-1 start under first-year coach Todd Bowles, the Jets have lost three of five going into the Texans game.
12. N.Y. Giants 5-5 (11): The best thing the Giants have done is force turnovers. They lead the league with 23 takeaways and a plus-13 differential.
13. Kansas City 4-5 (19): Alex Smith is playing as well as two years ago, when he helped Andy Reid and the Chiefs earn a wild-card playoff berth.
14. Indianapolis 4-5 (14): Matt Hasselbeck, 40, gets his third start this year in place of the injured Andrew Luck. Hasselbeck has a 2-0 record.
15. Seattle 4-5 (9): One reason the Seahawks have a losing record is because they’re last in redzone offense with a 35.0 success rate.
16. Miami 4-5 (21): The Dolphins’ win over Philadelphia gave interim coach Dan Campbell a 3-2 record, including wins over the Jags and Texans.
17. Philadelphia 4-5 (10): The Eagles blew a chance to tie the Giants for first place in the NFC East when they lost at home to Miami.
18. Washington 4-5 (20): Kirk Cousins (158.3) is the team’s first QB to throw for 300 yards and have a 150.0 rating since Sammy Baugh in 1948.
19. Chicago 4-5 (23): Jay Cutler is the first quarterback in Chicago history to throw two TD passes of at least 80 yards in the same game.
20. Houston 4-5 (22): Winning at Cincinnati on Monday night moved the Texans into a first-place tie with Indianapolis in the AFC South.
21. Tampa Bay 4-5 (24): After beating the Cowboys, the Bucs are thinking about a wild-card berth going into Sunday’s game at Philadelphia.
22. Oakland 4-5 (16): Second-year quarterback Derek Carr has 21 touchdown passes, six interceptions and a 101.5 rating.
23. St. Louis 4-5 (17): Jeff Fisher has benched QB Nick Foles and replaced him with Case Keenum, who was 2-0 as a starter for the Texans last year.
24. New Orleans 4-6 (18): The week off comes at a good time after the Saints fired defensive coordinator Rob Ryan and promoted Dennis Allen.
25. San Francisco 3-6 (25): The 49ers have scored only 12 TDs, fewest in the league. Their minus-97 point differential is the NFL’s worst.
26. Jacksonville 3-6 (31): The Jaguars’ upset victory at Baltimore pulled them within one game of first place in the AFC South.
27. Baltimore 2-7 (26): The Ravens’ once-powerful defense has forced a league-worst five turnovers. They’re minus-10 in turnover differential.
28. San Diego 2-7 (28): Injuries and perhaps the distraction of a possible move have curtailed what was expected to be a promising season.
29. Detroit 2-7 (32): Sunday’s victory over the Packers was the first time since 1991 the Lions have won a game at Lambeau Field.
30. Tennessee 2-7 (27): In the wins over Tampa Bay and New Orleans, Marcus Mariota threw eight TD passes without an interception.
31. Dallas 2-7 (29): The Cowboys are on a sevengame skid. They’ve scored 166 points and 16 TDs, both tied for the second fewest in the NFL.
32. Cleveland 2-8 (30): Dating to last season, the Browns have lost 13 of 15 games. They have a five-game losing streak with no relief in sight.
