Raiders’ Smith gets 1-year suspension
ALAMEDA, Calif. — Oakland Raiders linebacker Aldon Smith was suspended Tuesday by the NFL for one calendar year because of violations of the league’s substanceabuse policy, a person with direct knowledge of the decision said.
The penalty is effective immediately, said the person, who was speaking on condition of anonymity because the decision hadn’t been formally announced.
Smith, 26, was released by the San Francisco 49ers in August after several run-ins with the law, including an accusation by Santa Clara police of drunken driving, hit and run, and vandalism. Following his release, he landed across the bay with the Raiders.
Smith was in a contract year. He started seven games and played in nine for the Raiders, finishing his second straight suspension-shortened season with 28 tackles and 3½ sacks.
Cowboys waive QB Weeden
The Dallas Cowboys waived quarterback Brandon Weeden with the possibility of Tony Romo’s return this weekend after missing seven games with a broken collarbone.
Weeden went 0-3 filling in for Romo and Matt Cassel was 0-4.
The Cowboys also waived cornerback Corey White and running back Christine Michael. White was acquired off waivers from New Orleans in the offseason, and Dallas traded a late-round pick to Seattle for Michael the first week of the season.
Browns to keep Manziel as starter
The Cleveland Browns will go with quarterback Johnny Manziel as their starter for the remainder of this season.
The team made the announcement before Tuesday’s practice.
Manziel takes over for Josh McCown, who went 1-6 as a starter and missed the last two games with injured ribs.
Meanwhile, the NFL announced it has concluded its investigation into a domestic incident last month involving Manziel, saying that “there is an insufficient basis on which to take disciplinary action.”
