Residents, employees of Clarewood House join efforts for Walk to End Alzheimer’s

-

Alzheimer’s and dementia is something residents and caregivers deal with regularly at Clarewood House, a faithbased, nonprofit senior-living community in southwest Houston. Since opening in 1963, Clarewood House continues in its mission to provide comfortable, secure and dignified living for senior adults.

For the third year in a row, a team of Clarewood House employees showed their support by participating in the Alzheimer’s Association’s annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s on Nov. 7. Clarewood House residents joined the effort by raising awareness about dementia in the facility.

Residents also sponsored employee team members as a way to show solidarity and honor for current and past residents who have dealt with Alzheimer’s.

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, Alzheimer’s is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States. One in three seniors dies with Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia. Of the top 10 causes of death in America, it is one of the only diseases that cannot be prevented, cured or slowed.

“One of the reasons Clarewood is participating in the walk is because we have seen this issue up close and know how terrible it can be. I like being able to show support to the residents. I also appreciate all of the facts and information I can learn about Alzheimer’s and dementia shared by experts from Alzheimer’s Association at the Walk. It helps me recognize the signs and symptoms as I interact with residents on a daily basis,” said Santos Escobar, a Clarewood House employee.
