Three years after a sale fell through in the final stages, Phil Anschutz’s Anschutz Entertainment Group appears close to selling its 50 percent share in the Dynamo.

According to a person close to the negotiations, the sale of AEG’s 50 percent stake in the Dynamo is in the final stages “but not imminent.”

AEG, which also owns the Los Angeles Galaxy, owns 50 percent of the Dynamo and the remaining 27 years on the 30-year lease on BBVA Compass Stadium. Former boxing champion Oscar De La Hoya and Mexican billionaire Gabriel Brener each own 25 percent stakes in the club.

Although Major League Soccer is a single-entity league, commissioner Don Garber has long stated a goal to not have more than one owner per team. De La Hoya and Brener are expected to maintain their shares in the club.

At least one member of the group trying to purchase the Dynamo is from the Houston area, according to a person close to the talk, but the potential buyers have not been identified.

Rockets owner Leslie Alexander was close to finalizing the purchase of the Dynamo and the lease on BBVA Compass Stadium before abruptly walking away from the negotiations three years ago. Alexander is not part of the new group trying to purchase the team, the Chronicle confirmed Wednesday night.

“The situation for the last few years is that there have been on-and-off discussions with various groups over a possible sale,” Dynamo president Chris Canetti said. “That environment is likely to continue into the future. At this point, there is nothing to report in terms of a sale of the team.”
