Cooper bounces back after surprising loss to St. Agnes
The John Cooper School girls soccer team split a pair of matches last week, bouncing back from an eye-opening 4-0 loss to St. Agnes with a 6-0 win over Northland Christian last Thursday.
“(Last) Tuesday’s 4-0 loss against St. Agnes was actually a win for us as a team,” coach Amber Clevenger said in a release.
“This game exposed our weaknesses and allowed me to see what we need to focus on as a team, so that we are able to be competitive when it comes to conference play. It was also a win because I was able to get all 22 of my players on the field so everyone got playing time and experience.”
The real win came two days later, with Rilee Schumann notching two goals against Northland Christian.
Isabel Sands had a goal and an assist, and Melissa Martin and Gina Valderrama also scored.
“Thursday’s 6-0 win against Northland Christian was just the pick-up we needed to prove that we can score and that we are a talented team,” Clevenger said. “This was another opportunity to get all my players on the field and watch different players play different positions, so that I can find different options for future games.”
Clevenger said Sands and Jessica Young turned in outstanding performances. Cooper boys fall
The John Cooper boys soccer team dropped a narrow decision 1-0 last week at St. Thomas.
“The team gave another great effort, but unfortunately came up short with a loss to St. Thomas,” coach Bryan Sherman said. “After giving up an early goal, the team did a great job of keeping composed, but we missed the opportunities to tie the score with the two or three great chances we created.
“(But) I have no doubt the guys will break our goal-scoring drought soon.” The Woodlands, Magnolia move on.

The Highlanders avenged last year’s loss to Klein Oak, winning the rematch 16-7.

Magnolia rolled Sharpstown 42-0.
The Bulldogs take on A&M Consolidated in the 5A Division II area round at 7 p.m. Thursday in Waller.
