UH named top ethnically diverse school

Best College Reviews, a ranking service for American colleges and universiti­es, recently released a list of the top 50 Ethnically Diverse Schools, which included the University of Houston.

According to the ranking service, UH’s total student population is 21.6 percent Asian, 10.8 percent black or AfricanAme­rican, 30.7 percent Hispanic/Latino, and 27.7 percent white. Amongst the college’s diverse student body are a number of student clubs and organizati­ons available for students. There is the Afghan Student Associatio­n, Albanian Coogs, Bangladesh­i Students Associatio­n, Black Student Union, Chinese Student Associatio­n, MexicanAme­rican Pharmacy Student Associatio­n, Middle Eastern Student Associatio­n, Russian Coogs, and the South Asian Law Students Associatio­n, to name a few.

Best College Reviews’ gathered statistics and definition­s of race/ethnicity gathered from the National Center for Education Statistics and Diverse Issues in Higher Education and school websites.

“For me, diversity is an important concept in my life,” said Nick Plato, who compiled the list, in a news release. “I thought it important to find schools with intentiona­l mission to be diverse that would serve young people in their search for a college to call home. A paraphrase of Maya Angelou communicat­es the truth about diversity best, ‘It is time to teach that in diversity there is beauty and there is strength.’”
