All Humble city incumbents file for their posts

- By Bryan Kirk

Three Humble citycouncil seats will be up for grabs when voters go to the polls May 7.

The positions are two year terms and all incumbents have filed for their posts. As of press time, no one else has filed. Place 3

Norman Funderburk, 64, is seeking his second term for his Place 3 seat. He said he wants to continue the tradition of what he sees as excellent city leadership. “I want to be part of this," Funderburk said. “We have done a lot during my first term with street, drainage and infrastructure improvements.”

Funderburk says things like the city’s rich history and heritage, and the sense of identity that come with being part of the Humble community are important to him. There also is the growth factor. “As we grow, we recognize that we have an aging community, as the community ages it’s important that we watch for and identify the signs of decline and address those areas that need proper attention,” Funderburk said. Place 4

Allan Steagall, 79, and a resident of Humble for 15 years is seeking his eighth term.

Steagall said he has seen the city go through a lot of changes and was on the council when the community endured a major recession in 2009-2011.

He said he just loves serving the people in Humble

“When I retired, I was going

to be active with the senior (population) and volunteer … The mayor at the time asked me if I’d consider serving on the council, and I decided to get into it,” he said.

“The more I got into it, the more I enjoyed it, so I just stayed.”

Steagall is glad the city is working to improve the streets and drainage and pay for those without us- ing bonds or raising taxes.

“We were intent on not raising taxes, and only did approved projects we could pay for as we went,” he recalled.

The only time the city had to sell bonds while Steagall was on the council was in 2006, when it had to sell bonds to raise $15 million to upgrade sewer facilities.

“I have been very fortunate to serve with some very conservative people on this council, and the mayor,” he said. Place 5

David Pierce, 63, and a life-long Humble resident, is seeking his second term on Place 5.

Pierce won his first term as the city of Humble was beginning the transformation of many streets and upgrading old infrastructure that had been dormant and unimproved.

“My presence on council has given me the opportunity to question contractors about projects and new construction to assure our citizens that they meet our standards with regards to safety and beautification,” he said.

Pierce said there is still a lot of work to be done, particularly in relation to mobility projects to ensure the safety of the residents in Humble.

“Future mobility projects have to be addressed in order to get traffic to flow in and out of our city,” he said.

“Whether you live in Northshire or on the East side of Highway 59, the traffic just passing through our city can make it difficult for our residents to just get to the grocery store and back home safely.” Want to run?

Prospective candidates must appear in person at the city secretary’s office at Humble City Hall, 114 W. Higgins Street, Humble, TX 77338 or mail their applications to Humble City Hall before 5 p.m. Feb. 19.

For details, contact the city secretary at 281-4463061.

First day for early voting begins April 25 and it ends May 3.
