-

Demarco Jenkins, a Houston pizza restaurateur, was selected as a finalist in the Traditional Pizza category during the Pizza Pizzazz competition held in Columbus, Ohio, Jan. 24 and 25.

The competition was held during the North America Pizza and Ice Cream Show. Jenkins, owner of D’Marcos Pizzeria, faced 50 competitors from across the nation in the Traditional Pizza category and placed in the top six.

According to the show’s website, a traditional pizza was defined as having a red sauce and any combination of cheese, pepperoni, sausage, bacon, ham, meatball, hamburger, salami, mushroom, peppers, onion, tomato, olives, anchovies and spices. No other toppings outside of this list were permitted in the Traditional Pizza category. Jenkins created his restaurant’s signature pizza made with bacon, pepperoni, housemade Italian sausage as well red and yellow peppers.

Jenkins is next sched- uled to enter his pepperoni and sausage pizza into a cooking contest held during the International Pizza Expo in Las Vegas March 7-10. The event is considered to be the largest pizza show in the world.

Jenkins founded D’Marcos Pizzeria in 2014. Each dish incorporates signature Italian recipes passed down from an authentic Chicago pizzeria. D’Marcos has two Houston-area locations, including its newest location at 14642 Memorial Drive.
