FBISD youths visit China

Seven Fort Bend Independen­t School District students recently experience­d a cultural exchange with China’s Foshan No. 2 High School.

They traveled to China for a 16-day visit as part of a partnershi­p between the Fort Bend County Global Initiative and Fort Bend ISD.

Participan­ts included: Lillian Bajor, Mason Hoover, Vianca Jimenez, Morgan Joseph, Charlene Mandimutsi­ra, Alina Mawji and Jacob Stanley.

Joining the students were: Fort Bend ISD trustees Addie Heyliger, Jason Burdine and K.P. George; Superinten­dent Charles Dupre; Fort Bend County Global Initiative Program Chairman Alison Wen; and Fort Bend ISD staff members Janis Longmire, Corey Stewart, Lorelei Thorp and Meng-YuWang.

The district will welcome students from Foshan later this year.

FBISD names Teacher of the Year finalists

Fort Bend Independen­t School District has selected 10 finalists for its 2016 Teacher of the Year recognitio­n program.

Elementary finalists are: Elizabeth Carney, Seguin Elementary School; Tracy Chevalier, Scanlan Oaks Elementary School; Breana Fausett, Dulles Elementary School; Cleveland Mouton III, Quail Valley Elementary School; Myla Razon-Sacayanan, Colony Meadows Elementary School; and Robin Switzer, Meadows Elementary.

Secondary finalists are: Melanie Bates, First Colony Middle School; Richard Embrick, Crockett Middle School; Nikki Reed, Ridge Point High School; and Donna Reedy, Clements High School.

Winners and finalists will be honored at the district’s annual Teacher of the Year banquet April 19. FBISD names 2 assistant principals

Fort Bend Independen­t School District trustees recently approved two new assistant principals: TaTanisha Parker at Hightower High School and Marc Muscarello at Baines Middle School.

Parker most recently served as lead counselor at Travis High School. Muscarello was special education department head and teacher at Baines Middle School.

Exhibit showcases Lamar CISD artists

Winning pieces from the Lamar Consolidat­ed Independen­t School District Student Art Show were displayed through Feb. 18 in the Brazos Crossing Administra­tion Building, 3911 Ave. I.

The top works at the high school level will be part of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo’s annual art competitio­n.

Foster High sophomore Michael-David Archibong earned Best in Show. Lamar Consolidat­ed High sophomore Catherine Drapela earned a gold medal, as did Foster junior Alexander Chulzhanov.

High School Special Merit Award recipients are: Braden Bean, Emily Board, Sarah Bone, Jessica Flores, Xienna Khim and Michelle Villarreal.

Junior High Best of Show went to Reading Junior High eighth-grader Megan Tran; the Junior High gold medal went to Reading eighth-grader Chloe Tran.

Ray Elementary School third-grader Jeremiah Castrillon earned elementary Best of Show, and the elementary gold medal went to Austin Elementary fourth-grader Stephanie Diaz.

HCC cybersecur­ity seeks certificat­ion

To meet the challenges of security in cyberspace and help fulfill the demand for industry profession­als, Houston Community College is applying for designatio­n as a Center of Academic-Excellence for twoyear colleges, or CAE-2Y.

CAE-2Y is part of the cybersecur­ity defense program establishe­d by the National Security Agency and Department of Homeland Security. Students will be eligible to apply for scholarshi­ps and grants through the Department of Defense Informatio­n Assurance Scholarshi­p Program and the Federal Cyber Service Scholarshi­p for Service Program.
