Three officers investigating crash hit by car

-

For the second time in recent days, police officers were injured as they helped investigate a fatal crash.

The most recent incident occurred about 1:50 a.m. Thursday when a car veered from Texas 288 near MacGregor Way and landed upside down on the biking/hiding trail below along Brays Bayou, said Sgt. James Roque of the Houston Police Department.

Roque said a Dodge Charger was traveling northbound on the South Freeway when the driver lost control, veered from the freeway, plowed through a grassy median, crashed through a concrete barrier flipped over and ended up on the trail along the bayou.

A passenger in the car died at the scene, Roque said. The driver was rushed to a nearby hospital. Details of the driver’s injuries and condition were not released.

As officers were investigating the crash, Roque said, a woman driving the wrong way on the freeway slammed into them and a squad car.

Three officers were injured and were rushed to Memorial Hermann-The Texas Medical Center. One had a broken ankle while the others had neck and back pain.

The woman was detained at the scene. She was being evaluated for possible intoxication.

Roque said an officer at the scene spotted the woman’s car barreling toward fellow officers and told them to get out of the away. But they were unable to scramble to safety.
