Notre Dame wears down Duke

-

WASHINGTON — V.J. Beachem scored 19 points, including a couple of key 3-pointers late in the second half and in overtime as Notre Dame overcame a 16-point deficit to defeat No. 19 Duke in the quarterfinals of the ACC tournament.

Fourth-seeded Notre Dame (21-10) has now won five of the teams’ last six meetings.

Zach Auguste contributed 19 points and 22 rebounds for Notre Dame, which will meet No. 7 North Carolina in Friday’s semifinals.

Grayson Allen led Duke (23-10) with 27 points, but there wasn’t much help, in part because of foul trouble for an already-thin rotation.

Joel Berry II scored 20 points on 7-of-8 shooting to lead North Carolina, which shot 58.9 percent in an 88-71 victory over Pittsburgh.

No. 4 Virginia moved into the semifinals by beating Georgia Tech 72-52 behind its typical stingy defense and 26 points from conference player of the year Malcolm Brogdon.

Virginia (25-6) will face No. 11 Miami in the semifinals, after a balanced performance with plenty of contributors.

Evan Nolte, a little-used senior who averages 1.6 points, came through with a four-point play, followed soon by a jumper that boosted Virginia to a 49-35 lead.

Bellaire product Sheldon McClellan scored 21 points and fellow senior guard Angel Rodriguez had 19 to help Miami beat Virginia Tech 88-82

BIG TEN

Jalen Coleman-Lands scored 17 points, and Malcolm Hill broke a tie with a 16-foot jumper with 1:14 to go, helping Illinois fend off No. 20 Iowa’s frantic comeback for a 68-66 upset at Indianapolis.

The Fighting Illini (1518) won for only the second time in six games and will face No. 13 Purdue in Friday’s quarterfinals despite allowing the Hawkeyes to score 11 straight points in 98 seconds to tie the score at 66 with 1:40 to play.

Iowa (21-10) was led by Peter Jok, who tied his career high with 29 points couldn’t prevent the Hawkeyes’ fifth loss in their last six games.

BIG EAST

Josh Hart scored 25 points, Ryan Arcidiacono added 19 points and six assists, and No. 3 Villanova pulled away from Georgetown in the second half for an 81-67 victory to open its bid for consecutive conference tournament titles at New York.

Villanova meets Providence in Friday’s semifinals after the Friars beat Butler 84-70 behind 38 points from Ben Bentil.

In another quarterfinal, Trevon Bluiett matched his career high with 24 points, and No. 5 Xavier dominated from start to finish in a 90-72 victory over Marquette.

Xavier advanced to Friday’s semifinals to face third-seeded Seton Hall, which eliminated Creighton 81-73.

PAC-12

Chris Boucher had 19 points and 11 rebounds, and No. 8 Oregon withstood a late flurry to hold off Washington 83-77 in the Pac-12 tournament quarterfinals at Las Vegas.

The Ducks will play No. 15 Arizona in the semifinals. Allonzo Trier scored 23 points as the Wildcats held on to beat Colorado 82-78 after leading by 22 in the first half.

No. 12 Utah defeated Southern California 80-72 in another quarterfinal as Kyle Kuzma broke out of a scoring slump by missing one shot while scoring 23 points.

The Utes shot 61 percent, and Kuzma made 11 of 12 shots after scoring 15 points on 6-of-16 the previous four games combined.

Utah will play either Oregon State or California in the semifinals.
