Athletes to watch
Tyler Davis
For the third time this season, the 6-10 Texas A&M center won or shared freshman of the week honors in the SEC last week after he had 16 points, five rebounds, three blocked shots and two assists in the Aggies’ victory over Vanderbilt. That earned them a tie for the SEC regular season title, their first conference championship in 30 years, and the top seed in the SEC tournament. The Aggies play Friday in Nashville, Tenn., against Florida.
Fabian White
The 6-7 forward, who transferred from Kingwood after last season, has been essential to Atascocita’s 37-0 record because of his inside presence, a complement to the team’s strong guard play. In a game matching Houston-area teams, Atascocita will meet Sam Houston on Friday night in San Antonio in the semifinals of the boy’s Class 6A state championships.
Giles Barnes
His score in the 77th minute of the Dynamo’s season opener against New England was nominated for the MLS goal of the week. Unfortunately for the Dynamo, they allowed the equalizer in stoppage time of a 3-3 time. Barnes, who replaced Brad Davis as Dynamo captain, will attempt to rally them Saturday night at BBVA Compass Stadium against FC Dallas.
Isaiah Thomas
The 5-9 point guard for the Boston Celtics, who play host to the Rockets on Saturday night, became the shortest player selected to the NBA All-Star game this season since Calvin Murphy.
Jordan Spieth
It took only three tournaments for the world’s No. 1 golfer in 2015 to win one this season. But the young Texan has struggled since, with a tie for 21st, a missed cut and a tie for 17th. He had an opening round 79 in the Northern Trust Open in Los Angeles. He hopes his game comes back together this week in the Valspar Championship, where he won last year. Randy Harvey
