Beefing up for ‘Go Wagyu’ competitio­n

From the folks behind “Go Pig or Go Home” comes a new, beefier culinary competitio­n.

The Azuma Group is embracing the bovine and hosting “Go Wagyu” 5-9 p.m. May 15 at its Soma Sushi, 4820 Washington.

The event will challenge 10 local chefs to prepare their most imaginativ­e dishes in a wagyu beef throwdown. A panel of judges will crown a winning dish based on originalit­y, taste and presentati­on.

Participat­ing chefs will be announced at a later date.

Tickets — only 350 are available — are $199 and include tasting portions of the 10 competing dishes, sushi bites from Soma and Kata Robata and beer, wine and sake. A portion of ticket sales will go to the Texas Chapter of the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Off the chuckwagon

In celebratio­n of San Jacinto Day, the 130-yearold Emmett & Shine Chuckwagon will be parked outside of Frank’s Americana Revival. Beginning at 5:30 p.m. Friday, diners will be able to sample compliment­ary small bites (pecan-smoked Gulf shrimp and Dutch-oven Sweet Bread) inspired by Texas’ history and cooked on the wagon.
