Crawfish, music are on tap for Old Town Spring

It’s Spring; it’s time for crawfish and live music festivals. The Texas Crawfish & Music Festival in Old Town Spring is scheduled for two weekends April 30-May 7 while the neighborin­g Rails and Tails Mudbug Festival in Tomball is scheduled for one weekend only, April 30-May 1.

Both events feature live music, fresh crawfish and vendors in a street festival environmen­t not too far from each other.

Single day adult admission is $12 at the Texas Crawfish & Music Festival in Old Town Spring, while a six day pass is $50.

A pre-paid daily parking pass is available for $10 online for the 30th annual Spring festival.

Admission and parking at the fifth annual Tomball festival is free.

This year, headliners at the Texas Crawfish & Music Festival include Thunder Soul on April 29, Reckless Kelly on April 30, Angel Y Khriz on May 1, Kevin Black on May 6, Asleep at the Wheel on May 7 and Space Bear on May 8.

Other artists performing throughout the six-day festival include Bayou Roux, Jody Booth, Jason Cassidy, Selena tribute by Amanda Solis, Tony Ramey, Paula Nelson, Doug Supernaw and Vanilla Whale. Highlights from the zydeco stage include The Zydeco Dots, Bourbon Street and Weasel and the Zydeco Clan.

Meanwhile, in Tomball, the Rails and Tails Mudbug Festival features headliners The John Evans Band on April 30 and Beatles tribute artists The Fab 5 on May 1.

Other performers include Bayou Roux and Guppies From Outer Space. Family band Pelican 212, from the NBA television show “Little Big Shots,” will perform at 11 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

The Rails and Tails Mudbug Festival is located at 221 South Elm in downtown Tomball.

Plant nursery offers garden tips

Local live plant nursery The Arbor Gate in Tomball offers free classes to help gardeners of all abilities and skill levels learn new techniques for the Spring season.

Classes are typically offered on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays.

At 10 a.m. on April 21, Master Gardener Angela Chandler leads a free course called “Plant a Pocket Insectary.”

The course focuses on the organic gardening technique of employing the good insects to combat the pests.

Chandler is a member of the Harris County Master Gardener Associatio­n.

Kyle Park set for honky-tonk show

Texas singer-songwriter Kyle Park returns to perform at 10:45 p.m. on April 22 at Big Texas Dance Hall & Saloon in Spring. Tickets start at $10. Park has been a consistent traveler on the Texas honky-tonk circuit for a decade.

In October, he selfreleas­ed his latest album “The Blue Roof Sessions,” on which he continues to perfect his radio-friendly unique country sound with a side helping of hard rock.

Ensemble set for handbell concert

The Houston Bronze Ensemble will perform at Trinity Lutheran Church at 4 p.m. on April 24.

The performanc­e is part of the church’s concert series.

The Houston Bronze Ensemble presents different genres of classics performed on handbells.

Classic hymns, classic rock and jazz and movie and television theme songs will be performed during the concert, directed by the group’s Artistic Director Bill Nave.

Jack Ingram set for Tomball show

Texas singer-songwriter Jack Ingram will perform at 8 p.m. on April 27 at Main Street Crossing in Tomball. Tickets start at $40. His last studio album was 2009’s Big Dreams and High Hopes, which included the radio hits “That’s a Man” and “Barefoot and Crazy.”

This concert in Tomball follows a week after Ingram’s appearance at the third annual three-day fundraisin­g event titled Mack, Jack & McConaughe­y – also featuring former University of Texas football coach Mack Brown and actor Matthew McConaughe­y in Austin.

The three Texas celebritie­s raise money for local charities, and the main event was headlined by Eric Church.

Health fair offers free screenings

The Kleinwell Family Fun and Health Fair is set for 9 a.m. to noon on April 30 at Klein Memorial Stadium.

Sponsored by Houston Methodist Willowbroo­k Hospital, the free event includes more than 100 health and wellness booths, exhibits and free health screenings.

Physicians will answer questions, fitness demonstrat­ions include Zumba and kickboxing and the Klein ISD STEAM Express will demonstrat­e state-of-the-art education technology.

A Kid Zone features face painting, balloon animals and inflatable bounce houses.

New this year, the Wunderlich Farm Farmer’s Market will offer fresh local produce and other products.

Junior Gordon plans concert

The Junior Gordon Band will perform at 10 p.m. on April 30 at Masones Saloon.

From Alvin, The Junior Gordon Band tours the region constantly. So far this month, they’ve performed in Pasadena, Amarillo, Baytown, Stafford and Alvin.

His latest song is 2015’s “Watered Down,” a complaint about popular country music, among other things.
