OakBend Medical Center walk promotes stroke awareness
Some 350 people registered for OakBend Medical Center’s recent annual Stepping Out Against Stroke 3K at Seabourne Creek Nature Park in Rosenberg, prompting organizers to call it a growing success.
Also at the walk, the American Heart Association’s Kate Ramos presented the Gold Plus Performance Award to OakBend for its Get With the Guidelines program, which promotes consistent adherence to the latest treatment guidelines for stroke victims.

Richmond department responds to community
A recent holiday weekend gave Richmond Fire Department the opportunity to forge some community connections.
In addition to responding to emergency medical calls and different types of fires, the department attended the grand opening of Dickey’s BBQ on the Grand Parkway, offered a tour of the new fire station to a group of Girl Scouts and attended an emergency preparedness fair in River Park West.

OakBend employee celebrates 30 years Friends and colleagues came together for a surprise party March 10 to note the 30th anniversary of Victor Alley’s start date at OakBend Medical Center, 1705 Jackson St. in Richmond.
Alley, a housekeeper in the building services department, accepted a certificate of service, a portfolio and a letter from OakBend Medical Center Chief Executive Officer Joe Freudenberger at the ceremony.
Organization awards $34,000 to agencies
The Fort Bend Junior Service League recently presented $34,000 to seven area organizations through its Community Assistance Fund. Achieve Fort Bend, Habitat for Humanity, Rosenberg-Richmond Helping Hands, Hope for Three, Rosenberg Railroad Museum, Parks Youth Ranch and T.W. Davis YMCA received funds.
Civic group honors sheriff ’s sergeants
Citizens Advocating for Social Equity recently recognized Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office sergeants Scott Soland and Mary Gremen with certificates of appreciation for their work on the Crisis Intervention Team.
Soland linked the team’s success to changes in the way members approach people. Most of the calls made to CIT are related to mental health.
“You’d be surprised at the difference if you back off a little when you approach people,” Soland said.
Sugar Land native aboard USS Bataan
A 2010 Dulles High School graduate is serving in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Bataan.
Petty Officer 2nd Class John Cherry is a gunner’s mate aboard the Waspclass amphibious assault ship operating out of Norfolk, Virginia.
A Navy gunner’s mate is responsible for the maintenance and effectiveness of multiple weapons systems on the boat.
“I like that I am able to interact and teach people gun safety and the correct way to operate firearms,” Cherry said.
SSLW awards 7 scholarships
Suburban Sugar Land Women and Phenomenal Partners recently honored seven 2016 scholarship recipients at the 27th annual Service and Academic Excellence Luncheon.
The scholarship awards were based on community service, academic excellence and leadership.
