ROBERT “BOB” JOHNSTON
1920-2016
Robert “Bob” William Beggs Johnston, 96, born on April 16, 1920, passed away April 22, 2016. Bob is predeceased by his beloved wife of 67 years, Shirley Jean Simpson Johnston (2015). He is survived by his sons, Robert and wife Terri, David and wife Laura, Paul and wife Jaye, Tim and wife Kim; grandchildren, Jennifer, Nick, Jessica, Matthew, Shelly, Amanda, Shannon, Kelsey and Hannah; great grandchildren, Conner, Logan, Leah, Corban, Aiden, Zoey, Sadie, Tyler, Dylan, Alexis, Gabriel, Ashton, Ashley, Caleb, Kendall and Cayden; sister Nancy Hayes and many other relatives and friends.
Bob attended Forest Park High School in Baltimore, Maryland and graduated from Lafayette College in Easton, Pa. in 1942 with a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering. Bob was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. He relocated to Houston, TX in 1942 and worked for the Shell Oil Company for 47 years at the Deer Park Refinery. Bob helped to establish the Fellowship class at First Presbyterian Church, Houston; he was a Sunday school teacher, a volunteer with the Boy Scouts of America for 35 years as a Boy Scout Leader of troop 353 and later, a coed Explorer Scout leader. He was an Elder at Presbyterian Church of the Covenant and was the treasurer of Houston Campus Ministries for many years. Bob also served on the board of the Shell Deer Park Historical Society.
Most of all, Bob was a brother, a husband, a father to four sons, a grandfather and great grandfather. Bob’s love and commitment to his wife and family inspires us all; he leaves a legacy of love, faith, generosity and giving that will stay in the hearts of all those that loved and knew him. His family is forever grateful for the role model he was, for his enduring love and lessons in grace and steadfastness.
Visitation will be Wednesday, April 27, 2016 from 5pm until 9pm at Forest Park Lawndale Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, April 28, 2016 at 2:30pm at First Presbyterian Church, 5300 Main Street, Houston, Texas. Reception following the service.
Memorial donations may be made to First Presbyterian Church of Houston or Holly Hall Retirement Community.
