Arrieta rolls on, beats Bucs

Jake Arrieta dominated the Pittsburgh Pirates yet again, scattering two hits in seven shutout innings as the Chicago Cubs defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-1 on Tuesday night.

Seven months after shutting the Pirates down in the NL wild-card playoff, Arrieta (6-0) allowed only singles to Sean Rodriguez in the second and Francisco Cervelli in the seventh while lowering his ERA to 0.84.

BLUE JAYS 3, RANGERS 1: Justin Smoak’s first two home runs of the season, a tying drive in the ninth and a two-run shot in the 10th, lifted host Toronto over Texas.

PHILLIES 1, CARDINALS 0: Aaron Nola allowed two hits in seven innings, and Ryan Howard’s homer provided all the scoring as Philadelph­ia won for the seventh time in eight games and dealt host St. Louis its fifth loss in six.

ROYALS 7, NATIONALS 6: Lorenzo Cain capped a threerun ninth with a two-out single, giving Kansas City a walkoff win over Washington.

INDIANS 7, TIGERS 3: Francisco Lindor hit a three-run homer off Justin Verlander, scored three times and fell a triple short of the cycle, leading host Cleveland past Detroit.

BREWERS 5, ANGELS 4: Chris Carter hit two long home runs, and Junior Guerra won his first major league start as Milwaukee rallied from an early four-run deficit to beat Los Angeles at Miller Park.

BRAVES 3, METS 0: Matt Wisler wiped out New York with eight innings of one-hit ball, and Mallex Smith hit a homer off Matt Harvey as Atlanta won at New York.

DODGERS 10, RAYS 5: Trayce Thompson, Joc Pederson and Yasiel Puig homered as Los Angeles gave Scott Kazmir his 100th career victory with a win at Tampa Bay.

ORIOLES 4, YANKEES 1: Mark Trumbo hit two homers, and Chris Tillman scattered five hits over seven innings as host Baltimore extended New York’s skid to six games.

MARLINS 7, DIAMONDBAC­KS 4: Ichiro Suzuki’s two-run pinch single put Miami ahead during a four-run sixth as it rallied to beat Arizona at home.

WHITE SOX 4, RED SOX 1: Jose Quintana threw eight innings, and Jose Abreu had three RBIs for host Chicago.

GIANTS 3, REDS 1: Jeff Samardzija went eight innings to win this third straight start for visiting San Francisco.
