Sharing good laugh benefits well-being

-

Laughter is the best medicine. It’s something you have heard all of your life. And, myriad studies prove it really is true.

When something or someone tickles the funny bone, people relax a bit and open up to memories and stories that also make you feel good. If that laughter or story is shared with someone else, the benefits rise.

Poet Maya Angelou said, “The most calledupon prerequisite of a good friend is an accessible ear.” Without someone with whom to share our feelings and experiences, many are apt to become isolated and discouraged about life.

Fun and laughter are very much a part of everyday life at Parkway Place in Houston.

There are planned opportunities for enjoyment, but one of the strongest and best features, and one the residents really appreciate, is when they meet casually out walking the beautiful campus, or enjoying a meal together at the Bistro or dining room.

These encounters spark memories to share, invitations to volunteer or join a class or a conversation group, and, of course, more laughter.

More and more studies are crediting laughter with increasing memory and learning, even improving alertness. (Doctors tell us a good belly laugh lowers blood pressure, reduces certain stress hormones, and even gives a workout to your diaphragm, abdominal muscles, respiratory, facial, leg and back muscles — practically a whole body workout.)

Residents at Parkway Place made the move to their comfortable apartment homes for convenience and to simplify their lives.

But they’ve discovered the joys of community living include people to talk to, share experiences and opinions with ... even encouragement to record some of their memories in “Before I Forget” notebooks for their children and grandchildren.

Residents have discovered that having positive attitudes and dwelling on good times are very productive for a healthy lifestyle.

Schedule a visit to preview the campus, meet some residents and staff and picture yourself as part of the family. Call Rick at 281-677-5912 to learn more about carefree living at Parkway Place.
