Friendswood employee’s life-saving efforts recognized by city
Friendswood city council members honored Public Works Department equipment operator Arturo Rodriguez with the Five Star Spirit Award May 2.
“If you’re in trouble, you want him around,” City Manager Roger Roecker said of Rodriguez.
Since he began working for the city in August 2012, Rodriguez has helped an employee injured in a chainsaw accident and performed the Heimlich maneuver on two other coworkers.
Nassau Bay earns budget award
Nassau Bay has won the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada’s Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for the fourth consecutive year.
“This award is a reflection of the city’s continued commitment to ensure fiscal responsibility and transparency,” City Manager Jason Reynolds said. “The budget report is highly detailed yet organized and simplified in a way that the public can easily find and understand the information within the report or through the interactive budget portal on our website that was implemented last year.”
Nassau Bay finance director Csilla Stiles, senior accountant and internal auditor Jaime Vasquez and accountant Julia Mendoza also received certificates of recognition.

Nassau Bay will host a free hurricane preparedness seminar, 6-9 p.m. May 19 at city hall, 1800 Space Park Drive.
“Whether you have experienced a hurricane threat and evacuation or if you have just moved to the area, this seminar will teach you all you need to do to prepare before and what to do in the event of an evacuation: where to go, which routes to take and how to know when you can safely come back,” emergency management coordinator Jamie Galloway said. “Our goal is to help residents and business owners prepare for any emergency situation that could affect our region.”

The League City Police Department is coordinating a food and fund drive to benefit the Children’s Nutritional Outreach programs of the Galveston County Food Bank through June 11.
Examples of kid-friendly food donation items include pop-top cans, fruit cups and pouches, milk and juice boxes, peanut butter, jelly and granola bars. In addition, new toothbrushes and toothpaste are requested.

The La Porte Police Department celebrated the graduation of its most recent Citizens Police Academy class at an April 26 reception.
Class members include: Douglas Anderson, Olga Avila, Trey Ely, Deb Hathorn, Doug Hathorn, Malinda Juel, April Roden, Blanca Solis and Saranne Urich. Each attended 13 weeks of classes taught by La Porte Police Department employees. Handson training ranged from special weapons and tactics to community policing.

The Galveston Citizens Police Academy invites the community to its Alumni Association Garage Sale, 8 a.m. June 18 at 2619 Ball St.
Proceeds will fund items for the Galveston Police Department, including bulletproof vests for K-9 unit dogs; face protectors for mounted patrol horses; hazmat suits and radar equipment for marine search and rescue; and communication kits for the crisis negotiation team.

League City police officer earns award
The League City Police Department recognizes Officer Jason Jones as the recipient of The Fifty Club “Officer of the Year” Award for outstanding performance in 2015-16.
In the past year, Jones made 72 misdemeanor and 19 felony arrests, said Sgt. Eric Cox.
“Officer Jones’ attention to detail, investigative knowledge and superior performance exemplify the quality of work and commitment to service that our department strives for,” said Cox.
Jones and K9 Chico were honored at the 45th annual Fifty Club of Galveston County Awards Luncheon on May 2 at Moody Gardens Hotel in Galveston. League City church plans VBS in June
The League City Church of Christ will host a free Vacation Bible School from June 20-23 from 9 a.m. – noon with a Family Finale on Thursday at 1801 East Main League City.
