Spieth trails by a stroke in suspended Nelson

IRVING — Jordan Spieth finished off a 6-under 64 just before dark Thursday and was within a stroke of the lead when the first round of the AT&T Byron Nelson was suspended.

Sergio Garcia, Danny Lee and Johnson Wagner all shot 63. Lee and Wagner, like Spieth, completed the round that started 2½ hours late after morning rain.

Dallas native Spieth, who just missed a long eagle chance on the par-5 16th that would have matched the lead, is playing only his second tournament since squanderin­g a five-stroke lead on the back nine at the Masters.

Dustin Johnson and Freddie Jacobson also had 64s. In other news: • Kenny Perry birdied the final hole for an 8-under 64 and a two-stroke lead in the Regions Tradition in Birmingham, Ala., the first of five PGA Tour Champions majors.

Bernhard Langer bogeyed No. 18 for a 66 to fall into a second-place tie with Gene Sauers at Greystone Golf and Country Club.

• Muirfield was stripped of its right to host the British Open after the Scottish club voted against admitting female members in a move that provoked criticism from players and lawmakers.

The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers, which owns Muirfield, announced its decision to retain the club’s male-only policy following a ballot of its members.

A two-thirds majority was required for a change to take place but of the 616 members who voted, 36 percent were against allowing women.

Jones, Sharks shut out Blues

Martin Jones made 22 saves in his second straight shutout, and Tomas Hertl scored twice to give the San Jose Sharks a series lead for the first time in four trips to the Western Conference finals with a 3-0 victory over the visiting St. Louis Blues in Game 3.

St. Louis has gone 150:45 without scoring since Jori Lehtera’s second-period goal in Game 1 led to a 2-1 victory. In other news • The United States upended the odds and downed the Czech Republic 2-1 in a shootout to reach the semifinals of the hockey world championsh­ip in Moscow.

That sets up a semifinal Saturday against Canada, which pounded Sweden 6-0. Russia and Finland will contest the other semifinal.

Auston Matthews, 18, scored in the second period to tie the game and later scored the only goal in the shootout.

Baylor, Tolson edge Texas

A pair of unearned runs in the fifth inning sent Baylor to a 2-1 win over Texas in Austin.

Righthande­r Drew Tolson (6-3) got the win for Baylor (23-26, 9-13 Big 12).

Morgan Cooper (2-5) took the loss for UT (2129, 9-13). In other news: • Louisiana Tech scored 12 runs on 12 hits to claim the opening game of the Conference USA series against the Rice Owls 12-2 in Ruston, La.

Junior righthande­r Jon Duplantier (7-5) started and pitched 41⁄3 innings, allowing seven hits and three walks with two hit batters, and striking out eight for Rice (32-18, 19-8 C-USA). Louisiana Tech is 35-16 and 17-11.

Fuchs captures prelim bout

Houston boxer Ginny Fuchs won her first preliminar­y bout at the AIBA women’s world championsh­ips in Astana, Kazakhstan, taking a unanimous decision over Grazieli Jesus de Sousa of Brazil in the 112-pound flyweight division.

Fuchs, 28, must finish in the top four of the 49-fighter bracket or have one of two North or South American boxers finish in the top two to secure a spot at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Fuchs won 40-36 on all three judges’ scorecards. She will face Anna Alimardano­va of Azerbaijan, who had an openingrou­nd bye, Saturday. In other Olympic news: • Concerned about the threat of the Zika virus, USA Swimming has moved a pre-Olympic training camp from Puerto Rico to Atlanta.

Federer sits out French Open

Roger Federer pulled out of the French Open, ending his record of appearing in 65 consecutiv­e Grand Slam tournament­s dating to 2000.

The third-ranked, 17-time major champion, who had a knee operation this year but returned to play at the Monte Carlo Masters in early April, has been dealing with a back problem that has limited his schedule in recent weeks.

Skeeters routed by Long Island

Parker Frazier (4-1) took the loss as the Sugar Land Skeeters fell to the Long Island Ducks 9-2 in Atlantic League play at Constellat­ion Field.

The Skeeters’ Jeff Dominguez extended his hitting streak to 14 games.
