Athletes to watch
Bryson DeChambeau
The California native, who won U.S. Amateur and NCAA titles at SMU, will resume his campaign to gain a PGA Tour card through sponsor’s exemptions this weekend at the AT&T Byron Nelson in Irving. The low amateur from this year’s Masters turned pro a week later and tied for fourth in his debut.
Colin Moran
Florida’s first-round draft choice, sixth overall, in 2013 will be with the Astros for this weekend’s series at Minute Maid against the Texas Rangers. Acquired in a 2014 trade, he was hitting .288 with a .747 OPS for Fresno this season.
Ryne Birk
The second baseman for No. 2 Texas A&M became the fourth Aggie to win an SEC player of the week award in last week’s series victory over South Carolina. The junior from Katy Seven Lakes High had five runs, a double, two home runs, four RBI and a stolen base. He is hitting .328 going into the Friday and Saturday games at home against Ole Miss.
Mario Gutierrez
He will ride Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist in Saturday’s Preakness Stakes. This is his second Triple Crown quest, winning the first two legs in 2012 on I’ll Have Another. But the jockey was disappointed that year, when the horse was withdrawn the day before the Belmont with an injury.
Madison Keys
The 21-year-old graduate of the Chris Evert Academy hopes to become the next Maria Sharapova, who once said she played on clay like a “cow on ice” before becoming a two-time French Open champion. Since joining Sharapova’s coach, Keys is learning to play on clay, reaching the final of last weekend’s Italian Open heading into the French Open.
