Former Baylor student Dolores Lozano told reporter Joe Schad on Tuesday that former Baylor football coach Art Briles knew she was assaulted by one of his players and that she exchanged text messages with current Baylor assistant Jeff Lebby about the assaults.

Lozano told Schad former Baylor running back Devin Chafin assaulted her three times in 2014, and although coaches knew about the incidents, the player was never punished.

Lozano said she exchanged text messages with Lebby, who is Baylor’s passing game coordinator and running backs coach, about the assault as she was trying to decide if she should report the assaults to police. Lozano shared photos with police that she said were taken at the time of the incidents that show bruises on her arms and shoulders.

According to a statement of facts prepared by Lozano’s attorneys, Chafin slapped and kicked her and slammed her against a wall and “choked Lozano until she lost feeling in her body” in March 2014.

Lozano stated there were two incidents the next month when Chafin slammed her against a vehicle and slammed her to the ground.

Accusation denied

Chafin told Schad Tuesday that although he “grabbed” Lozano “because she was fighting me,” he “never threw her to the ground, kicked or choked her.”

Chafin said he never discussed the situation with Briles, but he did with Lebby, who is Briles’ sonin-law.

“Coach Lebby told me to calm down,” Chafin said. “I was emotional. I was crying. I needed to talk to somebody.”

Lozano said she went to the Waco Police in April 2014, but Baylor allowed Chafin to play that season without punishment, rushing for 383 yards and eight touchdowns on a team that went 11-2 and played in the Cotton Bowl.

Marijuana ‘first offense’

Chafin rushed for 578 yards and nine TDs last season, but he was recently dismissed by Baylor when he was arrested and charged with marijuana possession. When Chafin was arrested for possession in March, Briles said he wouldn’t practice in the spring but would likely return to the team.

“He’ll be back,” Briles told the Waco Tribune Herald. “It’s his first offense in over a four-year period, and he had some bad judgment, just like a lot of us do. He picked a bad time to do it. …

“It’s about representing yourself, your family, the Baylor community and making wise decisions. He’s remorseful, but there will also be some punishment phases that go along with the remorse.”

Lozano is planning to file a Title IX lawsuit against Baylor, as others already have.

“Dolores has tried hard to get past this but believes it’s important for others to know they can seek help,” Lozano’s attorney, Ricky Patel, told ESPN.
