Shooting suspect says ‘his mind went blank’

-

The suspect in a double shooting Tuesday morning that left his ex-girlfriend dead and her boyfriend wounded said “his mind went blank” after he arrived at the woman’s apartment in northeast Houston.

Darrell P. Mitchell, 28, is charged with murder in the shooting that occurred about 3 a.m. at 6603 Hirsch, according to court documents. He was being held in the Harris County jail in lieu of $100,000 bail.

Mitchell is accused of fatally shooting Lakiesha Lewis, 23, and critically wounding 24-year-old Johnel Francis.

Mitchell surrendered to police Tuesday night after investigators released information about the shooting and said they wanted to speak with him about the incident.

The documents state a woman who was Lewis’ best friend and knows Mitchell as Lewis’ ex-boyfriend told investigators he sent her a text message Tuesday morning asking her to call him. When she called him, he told her she would have to raise his child because he had killed Lewis and her new boyfriend. He said when he knocked on Lewis’ apartment door and Francis answered it, “his mind went blank and he shot and killed them,” according to the documents.
