Correa marks full year in bigs

-

Carlos Correa checked his phone when he woke up Wednesday. The date displayed — June 8 — immediately resonated.

“I was like, ‘Damn. One year already in the big leagues,’ ” he said, smiling.

Wednesday marked the one-year anniversary of Correa’s much-anticipated major league debut against the White Sox at Chicago’s U.S. Cellular Field. The Astros’ shortstop phenom singled off Chris Sale in his second at-bat that night, the first of 167 hits he recorded in his first calendar year as a big leaguer.

The ball from his first hit is back home in Puerto Rico with his father, Carlos, who also has the ball from his first home run, hit the next night off Zach Duke.

“It feels like it went by pretty fast,” Correa said before Wednesday’s game against the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Park. “It feels like yesterday I was making my debut.”

Correa, who doesn’t turn 22 until Sept. 22, batted .272 with 30 home runs and 100 RBIs in his first calendar year with the Astros. The reigning American League Rookie of the Year entered Wednesday batting .259 with eight home runs and 32 RBIs this season.
