THE JAZZ LOFT ACCORDING TO W. EUGENE SMITH: In 1957, photo essayist W. Eugene Smith moved into an old building in Manhattan’s Flower District. Populated by painters, photograph­ers, and composers, the building became a gathering spot for New York’s best jazz musicians. Smith took thousands of photograph­s of musicians at the “Jazz Loft” and wired the building with microphone­s, recording jam sessions. 7 p.m. Friday

LADY BE GOOD, INSTRUMENT­AL WOMEN IN JAZZ: A highlight of the contributi­ons of female jazz instrument­alists in America from the 1920s through the 1960s. Musician Patrice Rushen guides us through the triumphs and struggles of musicians, including Lil Hardin Armstrong, the Internatio­nal Sweetheart­s of Rhythm and the Synconette­s. 7 p.m. Saturday

AFERIM!: Set in the 19th century, this Romanian road movie follows gendarme Costandin and his son across a barren landscape in search of a slave who has run away and is suspected of having an affair with a nobleman’s wife. 5 p.m. Sunday
