Urban League honors fathers

The Houston Area Urban League has helped African Americans and other minorities secure economic self-reliance, parity and civil rights for 48 years. The nonprofit will celebrate its anniversar­y during its Equal Opportunit­y Day Gala June 18. To be held in the Ballroom of the Americas at the Hilton Americas Hotel, the event starts with a reception at 6 p.m. A program and dinner follows at 7 p.m. Comedian Marcus D. Wiley is this year’s featured entertaine­r. This year’s gala theme is “Empowering Families… Celebratin­g Fathers.” During the event, the league will honor those who help the nonprofit fulfill its mission to provide people with assistance in finding housing, jobs and education through their humanitari­anism, corporate charity, monetary donations and local philanthro­py are to be honored. This year’s honorees include John Nau, Kase Lawal, Gerald D. Hines, Willie Iles and Will Norwood. Individual tickets are $300.
