Urban League to celebrate fathers at fundraiser
The Houston Area Urban League has helped African Americans and other minorities secure economic self-reliance, parity and civil rights for 48 years. The nonprofit will celebrate its anniversary during its Equal Opportunity Day Gala June 18.
To be held in the Ballroom of the Americas at the Hilton Americas Hotel, the event starts with a reception at 6 p.m. A program and dinner follows at 7 p.m.
Comedian Marcus D. Wiley is this year’s featured entertainer. This year’s gala theme is “Empowering Families… Celebrating Fathers.”
During the event, the league will honor those who help the nonprofit fulfill its mission to provide people with assistance in finding housing, jobs and education through their humanitarianism, corporate charity, monetary donations and local philanthropy are to be honored. This year’s honorees include John Nau, Kase Lawal, Gerald D. Hines, Willie Iles and Will Norwood.
Individual tickets are $300. Gala sponsorships range from $3,000 to $100,000.

The annual gala serves as a fundraiser for the Houston Area Urban League’s programs such as workforce and economic development, housing, community service, and education.
Last year, the Houston Area Urban League served more than 10,000 people. The league, founded in 1968, is a United Way agency and is affiliated with the National Urban League.
